Classical Yoga


This is a friendly class, where we explore the classical tradition of yoga, The class is suitable for all levels, and everybody is welcome. Each class is a process, starting with physical movements, through to breathing practices and finally relaxation or meditation. This has a thorough, comprehensive and harmonious effect: mental and physical rejuvenation.
Physical yoga influences the whole body beneficially - it is strengthening, improves balance, and the movements also affect and massage the inner organs, which are extremely important for our health. If the breath is shallow and irregular, it will influence the way we feel. The yogic breathing exercises allow us to gradually and naturally release tensions and inhibitions in the breathing rhythm. This manifests in daily life as clarity, energy and a feeling of release.
Relaxation releases deeper muscular tension and strengthens the immune system. It improves the quality of sleep and lowers stress levels; a very good exercise for busy London! Meditation increases awareness. Awareness of the present moment, and awareness of the contents of your own mind - and ultimately the stillness behind all this.
Rather than judging or analysing yourself or your surroundings, meditation involves relaxed attention. As you continue to practise this relaxed attention, you will rest more in yourself, and your response to life will come less from fear, or confusion, and more from your inner centre.

Nicola Birch teaches Yoga in the Classical Style, on Mondays from 7:30pm to 9pm, Wednesdays from 6pm to 7:15pm; the classes are ideal for all levels.
