Cranio Sacral Therapy at the Haelan Centre
Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful hands on therapy that supports the body’s natural tendency to find optimal health and balance. By helping the body to get back in touch with its own innate wisdom, it restores health and a sense of well-being.
Craniosacral Therapy was first developed by osteopath William Sutherland who discovered the presence of tides in the body that he believed were connected to the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the nervous system. These subtle rhythmic motions, essential to health, can become compromised through all sorts of life’s events including injury, ill-health or stress.
The practitioner listens through their hands to what is going on in the client’s system, feeling out any disturbances or blockages, and gently invites the restoration of flow and health. A feeling that you have been heard and held at a deep level is a common experience during a session.
During a session, the client lies on the treatment table, fully clothed – you’ll be comfortable and warm, and can be sitting if lying down is not practicable for you. The practitioner will rest their hands lightly on your body, often starting at the feet and moving around to the sacrum, to the head, and any areas that particularly need attention.
On the first visit, a short medical case history is taken. The hands-on time usually last around 40 minutes. Craniosacral Therapy works with the whole person and changes may occur in body, mind and spirit during and after sessions. You may sense relaxation, stillness, sleepiness. Afterwards you may feel energised or wanting to rest.
While a one-off session can be very beneficial, a sequence of sessions may be advisable. This will be discussed at the end of your session.
